Henry Public — my new brunch spot

Millet Graincake with Poached Egg and Hollandaise

I tried Henry Public for burgers when it first opened. They were good, the cocktails were great. It’s a bit off the beaten path, so I hadn’t been back. I’d been meaning to go back, but I rarely walk by and you know – out of sight, out of mind. Then recently, a few people told me about their amazing Bloody Marys. One of those recommendations came from someone I follow on Recco. It has been in the forefront of my mind for a few weekends now. And we finally had a free Sunday, so we went! The brunch menu itself doesn’t give you much clue as to the quality of the food. There’s a few hints — “sweet and salty” french toast, “millet grain cake,” but other than that, it looks normal. Egg sandwich, Steak and Eggs…Honestly, I was coming to try their Bloody Henrys – their version of the bloody mary made with shallot infused vodka and celery bitters. And those bloody drinks did not disappoint — and the garnish was quite tasty too!  I ate all of mine right after I took this picture. But here’s the thing, I’m coming back for the food.  The brunch...

Sud vino e cucina

Mmmmm....burrata

Recently, I had a fabulous meal at Sud in Bed Stuy! This is a restaurant that really knows how to use their twitter.  I’d been wanting to go ever since I first read about it (which may have been on someone else’s twitter feed…) It seemed like a great new italian place.  I know there are already tons of italian restaurants, most of them doing brick oven pizza right now, but this one was different.  No pizza, small menu and a southern italian wine list.  I love southern italian wines — I even recently took a class at Brooklyn Wine Exchange and it made me like them even more, if that’s possible!  So when the restaurant invited me (and other followers) on twitter to enjoy their last half price wine night, I had to go. I’m so glad we went and can’t wait to go back.  Recently they’ve been tempting their followers with freshly made Sangria.  I actually saw the huge glass container of that sangria being whisked down into the kitchen while I was there and commented to my husband how good it looked! The restaurant is small with a great exposed brick wall and a large wood...

Falafel at Darna

Yummy falafel fillings

Darna, a super small spot on Court St that promised to serve great falafel, opened recently. I love falafel, so I thought I would check it out, plus the little ode they put in the window while renovating made me smile. How could you not want to try this place?  They also have much more on their menu than just falafel — steak sandwiches, BLT’s, salads and more.  All of their sandwiches also come with a side salad. I ordered the “Falafull Wrap.”  The curious thing about their falafel wrap is it’s not stuffed with the usual — it has some interesting additions that make it super hearty and very filling.  Instead of just falafel, greens, tomato and tahini, this one also includes roasted red peppers, portobellos and caramelized onions.  The tahini is a lemon tahini.  It was delicious and I almost couldn’t finish it…almost!  It was too good to leave any behind.  The falafel was as promised – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. For the traditionalists, you can also get the “Darna Falafel” sandwich which is just falafel with tomatoes, cucumbers, romaine and regular tahini.  I’m sure it will be just as tasty as...

Sandwiches at Smith Canteen

Another cafe has opened in Carroll Gardens and it’s serving tasty food and delicious coffee! Smith Canteen is located on the the corner of Smith St and Carroll St.  It’s a lovely corner cafe with lots of beautiful light coming in through the huge windows.  They are located across the street from the Sunday Carroll Gardens Green Market and they take full advantage of it!  They offer a weekly Green Market special on their chalkboard menu — very cool! It’s owned by the same people who own Seersucker, just a few doors down.  They used to do a breakfast and lunch service at the restaurant, but have now transferred this to the lovely cafe. I tried a couple of sandwiches and was quite pleased with the quality.  I’m looking forward to going back to try more of them as well as the breakfast offerings – Strawberry pop tarts and spinach croissant anyone?!?     For now, check out the video of these two yummy sandwiches!   Other links you may find useful: Smith Canteen on Recco Smith Canteen on Twitter Seersucker

Tipsy Parson

Fried Calamari Salad

My husband and I spent our Easter at the TriBeCa Film Festival seeing movies. This year the movies are in Chelsea and the East Village — not in TriBeCa at all! Fortunately, there are still a lot of good restaurants to eat at in both of these neighborhoods. Yesterday, we found ourselves in Chelsea with a couple of hours to kill between films. I’ve been wanting to try out Tipsy Parson since before it opened. I walked by one day and there was this cute new place with walls that had been painted to look as if it was filled with books. I knew right then that this would be a place for me. I have a love affair with books – and have way too many in my apartment. I finally ate here last night and it was wonderful – the food, the service, the atmosphere (well except for the one table that came in at the end and thought they were in their frat house). The menu was filled with tasty treats I wanted to try – I have to go back at least twice more to taste the things I didn’t have room for! We decided...
